Prof. Dr. med. Harald Marcel
Bonel
Head of Breast & Women's Imaging · FMH Radiology · Lindenhofspital & Inselspital Bern
Prof. Bonel is a Bern-based radiologist whose clinical and academic work has centred on breast imaging and skeletal radiology with a focus on rheumatology for more than two decades. He practises at Lindenhofspital, part of the Lindenhofgruppe, and at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, and he is a member of the Swiss Society of Senology. He studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich, completed his radiology residency at the LMU Munich and a research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. His research on breast MRI and structured reporting has appeared in leading journals including Radiology. He has been a reader in Swiss breast cancer screening programmes since 2011. He also reads pelvic MRI for gynaecological indications: uterine fibroids and adenomyosis, including FIGO mapping for treatment planning, ovarian masses characterised with the O-RADS system to separate benign from malignant, and endometriosis, with staging and anatomical mapping for surgical planning. Those reports are structured for direct use by the referring gynaecologist. Every mammogram, ultrasound, breast MRI and pelvic MRI he reviews is read with the eye of a specialist who reads these studies every working day, and with a clear sense of what a finding means for the woman waiting for an answer.

Prof. Dr. med. · FMH Radiology
A suspicious mammogram or an equivocal breast MRI should not leave a woman waiting for weeks. An independent reading by a breast imaging specialist turns uncertainty into a clear next step, whether that step is reassurance, a targeted biopsy or a well-planned operation.
Who this is for
When a breast scan needs expert eyes.
A breast imaging second opinion provides clarity when it matters most, before a biopsy, before an operation, before weeks of uncertainty.
Women with an Uncertain Mammogram or Ultrasound
BI-RADS 3 or 4 finding with an unclear next step · Dense breast tissue limiting the mammogram · Asymmetry, microcalcifications or architectural distortion · Confirmation before a biopsy is scheduled
Women Facing a Breast MRI Result
Enhancing lesion of uncertain significance · Preoperative staging before breast surgery · High-risk screening MRI (family history, BRCA) · Implant assessment and suspected rupture · Follow-up during or after chemotherapy
Pelvic MRI · Female Imaging
Ovarian mass characterisation with O-RADS · Endometriosis staging and anatomical mapping · Uterine fibroids and adenomyosis, FIGO mapping · Structured report for the referring gynaecologist
Gynaecologists, Breast Surgeons & Oncologists
Subspecialist breast imaging interpretation · Extent of disease before surgery · Correlation of mammography, ultrasound and MRI · Discussion of biopsy targets · Structured PDF ready for the tumour board
Referring Clinicians & GPs
Patients in regions without a breast imaging specialist · Discordant findings between two reports · Second opinion before referral to a breast centre · Clear, clinician-facing structured report
Skeletal Radiology · Rheumatology Focus
Unclear inflammatory arthritis or spondyloarthritis findings · Suspected giant cell arteritis or large-vessel vasculitis · MRI monitoring of disease activity under treatment · Second opinion before starting biologic therapy
International & Remote Patients
No breast imaging subspecialist locally · Humanitarian and remote area support · Report in English or German · Fully online, upload from anywhere
